Below the Root is an underknown work of art. It shares the calm, thoughtful play of King’s Quest (1983) and Karateka (1984), but also draws additional depth from the world of Zilpha Keatley Snyder’s Green-Sky trilogy of books (Below the Root, And All Between and Until the Celebration).
The game world is remarkably open and huge for its time, with hundreds of sections of the map to visit, and a hundred characters whose feelings and thoughts you can pense. There are platform challenges and thoughtful puzzles and an intricate plot to uncover within the world as you glide from branch to branch with your shuba, sleep in a nid, and gather wissenberries in order to explore and learn and cajole.
This project brings the original Commodore 64 game to the browser through automated deconstruction, analysis, and reconstruction of its original program. The art, words, and music were extracted preserved with complete fidelity, but the code has been updated with modern controls, autosave, and an in-game map that make Green-Sky easier to visit and explore.

The creators of the Below the Root game put a lot of love into it, and it deserves to be remembered and appreciated. Perhaps you played this game as a kid and remember looking for a trencher beak. Perhaps you’ve just read the novels and are curious about what happens next. Perhaps you’re a pixel artist or a chiptune musician and are inspired to enhance the art or music. Perhaps you just want to experience a piece of computer gaming history.
Whoever you are, please enjoy this restoration of a beloved game from my childhood.
